Temptation Part 2
  • Introduction:
    • Mark 1:12 And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
  • THE LUST OF SATISFACTION
    • James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
    • The self-gratification of our appetites
      • Matthew 4:2 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
    • The passion of our self-reliance
      • Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
      • Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
        • 1. Man needs more than bread. He needs more than physical life and physical needs being met.
        • 2. Man needs God’s life. He needs eternal life, and he needs his spiritual needs met.
        • 1. He would have failed in meeting the spiritual needs of man.
        • 2. He would have failed by teaching error—the error that the physical is more important than the spiritual and that receiving is more important than giving.
  • “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and [then] all these things shall be added unto you” (Mt. 6:33).
  • “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst” (Jn. 6:35).
  • “This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (Jn. 6:50–51).
  • “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food” (Jb. 23:12).
  • “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Ps. 119:103).
  • “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts” (Je. 15:16).
  • Application:
    • 1 Corinthians 10:13a There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man:
      • Four clear lessons are seen in this temptation.
        • 1. Temptation often attacks an area of desperate need such as hunger.
        • 2. We must learn that we do not live by bread alone.
        • 3. Temptation is to be resisted by using the Word of God.
        • 4. When needs arise, a person must always strengthen himself against temptation.
    • Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
    • Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
